The Old Bell Hotel & Restaurant, located next to The Abbey in the centre of Malmesbury, is reputed to be the oldest Hotel in England. Walter Loring, sometime Abbott of Malmesbury (the first capital of all England), founded this ancient hostelry in 1220. Within the hotel remnants can still be found; the carved window surrounds on the rear walls, the canopied fireplace in The Great Hall and stone arches cut through the first floor. This historic and small luxury hotel has the atmosphere of an extremely comfortable country home.
